The C-wire stance, stated plainly

Most thermostats need four wires to run heat and cooling; a smart thermostat needs a fifth, the C-wire, to draw continuous 24-volt power for its screen and its Wi-Fi radio. Houses built before smart thermostats existed often only ran four conductors to the wall, because nobody needed a fifth. The workaround the big-box aisle sells is a battery adapter or a "power extender kit" that borrows current off the other wires. It works, sometimes, until it doesn't — flickering displays, thermostats that drop offline, systems that short-cycle because the adapter is stealing current the compressor relay needed.

We pull new low-voltage wire from the air handler or furnace board to the thermostat location instead. It's more work up front, usually another thirty to sixty minutes depending on the wall and the attic access, and it's the difference between a thermostat that works for ten years and one you'll be troubleshooting by next summer. If running new wire genuinely isn't possible — a slab house with no attic access and a wall we can't fish — we'll say so on site and talk through the actual options rather than sell you a kit we don't trust.

Smart Thermostat Install

A real C-wire run to the air handler or furnace board, a level baseplate mount, and full configuration of schedules, geofencing and equipment compatibility before we leave. We check the system type — single-stage, two-stage, heat pump with aux heat — and set the thermostat's equipment profile to match, because a heat pump running on a generic profile will default to expensive electric aux heat far more than it needs to.

Zoning Control Retrofit

Two-story houses in Austin run one classic complaint: downstairs is a fridge, upstairs is an oven, and one thermostat can't fix both at once because it only sees one room. Zoning splits the ductwork into two or more sections with motorized dampers, each with its own thermostat, controlled by a panel that tells the system which zone is calling and adjusts the blower and dampers to match. It's a retrofit onto ductwork you already have, not new ducts.

Where we draw the line

We won't add zoning to a duct system we haven't checked for static pressure first. Dampers closing on an already-overworked blower just moves the strain somewhere else.

Zoning changes how air moves through ductwork that was sized for one path. If that duct system is already tight or undersized, we'll tell you before the panel goes in, not after the callback.

What this doesn't cover

  • A smart thermostat doesn't fix a system that's already undersized or leaking air at the ducts. It reports the problem better; it doesn't solve it.
  • Zoning needs at least two independent supply trunks to split cleanly. A single trunk with branch runs may need duct modification first, priced separately.
  • We don't install battery-adapter thermostats. If new wire genuinely can't be run, we'll say so and discuss the honest alternatives on site.
  • Some older furnace boards don't carry a dedicated low-voltage transformer big enough for a zone panel. If yours doesn't, adding one is a parts cost we'll show you before the work starts.
